Tezos (XTZ) is a smart-contract blockchain that was released in 2018, making it a third-generation blockchain. The smart-contract blockchain is similar to Ethereum, but with the difference that the Tezos blockchain continuously improves through on-chain governance, without the risk of a hard fork, i.e. a split into two different cryptocurrencies (e.g. Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash), which can occur when the protocol of the blockchain changes. Tezos is based on the proof of stake concept, which enables staking.
